Student Reporting 

As stated in the honor pledge, Virginia Tech students agree that they will not lie, cheat, or steal, but that they will not tolerate misconduct in their peers. If you know a fellow student is cheating, there are steps you can take to uphold the integrity of your academic community.

  • Virginia Tech’s OUAI does not consider it an honor violation to not report a fellow student for academic misconduct.
  • In lieu of reporting, students may approach a peer to express concern about perceived academic misconduct as an effective alternative. Being seen by peers speaking up about potential academic misconduct can have a very positive influence on the culture of a class.
  • However, sharing concerns about academic misconduct with your professor or instructor may be the best option. Faculty or TA’s can evaluate your concerns and may have better access to the evidence necessary to demonstrate misconduct.
  • Faculty may choose to investigate or report the incident with a student as a witness. It is also possible for a student reporting misconduct to remain anonymous if the faculty member involved has sufficient evidence without the reporting student’s account. 

Student Report Form

  • To report academic misconduct of an undergraduate student, please fill out the Student Reporting Form.
  • In order to create a case, the OUAI considers the following information and evidence:
    • Document of the assignment in question
    • Syllabus for the class, including the honor code statement
    • Name of the reporting student (if you would like to remain anonymous, we can contact the faculty overseeing the class to see if they have sufficient evidence without your report).
    • Name of the student reported
    • Class in which the conduct allegedly occurred (specifically, course number and title)
    • Name of the instructor for the class
    • Description of the alleged misconduct observed
