Honor System Investigation
Reporting an Honor Code Violation
Should you become aware of or witness a suspected Honor Code violation, please follow these guidelines:
- Do Not Penalize the Student Directly:
- The Undergraduate Honor System is responsible for assigning and implementing sanctions for academic misconduct.
- While faculty members may recommend sanctions, the University’s policy is that most cases should result in an F* as the students final course grade, indicating failure due to an Honor Code Violation.
- Recommendations can vary from more severe to lesser penalties based on the circumstances. Possible sanctions include a lowered final course grade, point reduction on an assignment, a zero on the assignment and completion of the Academic Integrity Education Program. In severe cases, suspension or expulsion may be recommended with approval from an honor system hearing panel.
- Prepare Documentation: Begin gathering information for the Honor System Investigation Form, if needed. This may include:
- Course Syllabus with references to the Honor System
- Statements or policies on group work verses induvial effort
- Evidence such as originals of exams, quizzes, homework, and computer programs
- A detailed statement of events in your own words
- Statements from witnesses
- Dates and times of the incident or when material was submitted
- Relevant pages from the course text, website, or other materials
- We request that all documents be submitted in PDJ, JPEG, PNG, .MOV, or (.docx)
- Report Timeline: Remember, you have 10 CLASS DAYS from the DATE OF DISCOVERY to report a suspected violation using the reporting form available on our website.
